Ted Harty started his underwater career as a Scuba Instructor working at Tilden's Scuba Center in Marathon in 2005. He transitioned into freediving and started working for Kirk Krack, founder of Performance Freediving International (PFI), in 2009.
After several years of working directly with Kirk, he started Immersion Freediving, where he ran PFI classes in Fort Lauderdale. Ted quickly moved up the PFI ranks and became the first independent Instructor to obtain PFI Intermediate & Advanced Instructor and Instructor Trainer certifications.
Ted broke the longest-standing US freediving record at the pool world championships in 2011. He was a team captain for the USA Freediving team in Nice, France.
His deepest dive is 279 ft (85 m) and his longest breath-hold is 7 min.
Ted has been a pioneer in developing online freediving curriculum.
In 2018, he was awarded the Dimitris Kollias award and a $2,000 check for his contributions to promoting freediving safety to the freediving and spearfishing community.
He took that check, hired a web developer, and hired two videographers to come to his house, and he created his pride and joy, www.FreedivingSafety.com.
FreedivingSafety.com is a free online course where anyone can learn the truth about shallow water blackout, how to tell if they are wearing too much weight, and how to save their buddy's life if they blackout.
After seeing the success of FreedivingSafety.com, he started building other online courses, like his Road Map To Frenzel course, which teaches the Frenzel Equalization method.
He has continued to develop online courses, created a podcast Freedive Live, and most recently, this site Freedive University.
Dive safe out there; it's not even that hard!
